Pricing / Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a standard size for an atarah?
An atarah typically is 2-1/2" to 4" wide and 24" to 36" long.  There is a wide variation depending on the size of the person it is for and overall design of the tallit.  I recommend that the ends reach at least to the collar bone on each side.

Is there a standard size for corners?
No.  Most often they are 3" to 4" square but can be any size or shape large enough for the design.  In fact, there don't have to be any corners at all since they mainly serve as a decorative element and a way to reinforce the corners of the tallit so that the tzitzit don't tear it.  The only requirement is that tzitzit are tied (according to halacha) in each of the four corners of the garment.

Is it permissible to mix silk with wool, acrylic or cotton?
The only mixing of fabrics not allowed is wool with linen which is strictly prohibited by Jewish law.  This is called "shatnez" and Torah scholars offer several explanations.  However, to avoid any potential problems, it is best not to mix plant-based fibers with animal fibers.  For more information, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shatnez

How long will it take to have my items embroidered?
Generally speaking, I need 7 - 10 days to complete your order.  However, since I usually have many projects in work with strict deadlines, it could take longer, so please allow adequate time.  For an atarah and/or corners, I suggest 2 weeks.  However, for a custom tallit, I need at least 6 weeks.

Can I use my own fabric?  How much do I have to send?
Yes!  If you would like the embroidery done on fabric that matches your project, you can send it to me.  Natural fabrics are preferred (silk, cotton, rayon, wool.)  Polyester fabrics are difficult to work with and do not yield a good stitch quality so it is possible that I will not be able to use it once I inspect it.  For an atarah, I need a minimum of 1/4 yard of 45" wide fabric.  For an atarah and corners, I will need 1/2 yard.

Do you have fabric for me to choose from?
I keep a fairly large inventory of silk and wool fabrics in many colors.  If you need me to match your fabric, you can send a swatch to me or, in some cases, I will send several small swatches to you to pick from.

What designs are available?
I have hundreds of designs in my collection in Jewish themes, as well as other categories.  I am happy to send images to look at in a particular category and the thread/fabric colors can be customized.  If I don't have something that meets the client's needs, I will provide links to several embroidery sites online and will purchase a reasonably priced design.

If you have a picture that you want to turn into an embroidery design, it must be digitized into a format that an embroidery machine can read.  The fee for digitizing starts at $25 and is based on the size, complexity of the design and number of color changes.  For a more in-depth description of the digitizing process, please go here.

What is the cost for an atarah?
Unless the bracha (blessing) is very long, an atarah is $50 which includes silk or wool fabric, stabilizer backing, thread and computer set-up.  The neckband is hemmed, pressed and ready to be sewn onto the tallit.  A small discount is given if the customer provides the fabric.

What is the cost for a set of corners?
Corners start at $30 for a set of 4.  However, complexity of design (stitch density), number of colors and finished size affect the final price.  An embroidered hole for the tzitzit is stitched, if requested.

Payment?
All custom embroidery must be paid in full before the item is made.  No exceptions.  I accept personal checks and Paypal.
